Beyond the Headlines: A Personal Account from Ukraine’s National Prayer Breakfast

This summer, I was honored to participate in the National Prayer Breakfast of Ukraine. Accompanied by Brendan Welsh and Allan Kupka, we journeyed via trains, planes, and automobiles to reach the city of Kyiv, where the event took place. The experience was both powerful and surreal.

The National Prayer Breakfast convened a diverse assembly of religious leaders, government and business leaders, and Ukrainian citizens. Many of those in attendance have been profoundly affected by the tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict with Russia, but the breakfast provided a space for prayer, community and hope.

Amidst continuous news reports on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there remains an underreported narrative: the religious persecution faced by Ukrainian Christians at the hands of Russian forces. I had the privilege to shed light on this critical issue through my involvement in a panel discussion during the event.

I recently sat down with Abigail Speciale to reflect on the experience and the insights gained from our time in Kyiv.
