Doug was raised in Naugatuck, Connecticut, where he first cut his teeth in local politics. He is a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Connecticut and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Tufts University.

Doug was an active member of the Young Presidents Organization in Arizona. He lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife, Carla.
