Tom Synhorst is Chairman and a founding partner of DCI Group. Formed in 1996, DCI Group applies a political campaign planning and execution approach to corporate public policy issues. This innovative approach has made DCI Group a leading public affairs firm worldwide whose clients are among the largest companies in the world. Since its founding, DCI Group has grown from a six-person operation with one client to one of the largest public affairs firms in the United States with more than 140 employees and offices in Washington, D.C. and Brussels, Belgium.
Tom is a trusted advisor to leaders at the highest levels of business, government, and politics. He is also a successful entrepreneur who has founded and managed a range of businesses. Tom manages a six acre vineyard in Iowa and founded the Dillenkoffer Endowment, a non-profit organization that provides college scholarships for rural gay and lesbian students.
Prior to founding DCI Group, Tom worked on political campaigns for two decades, including Senator Bob Dole’s presidential campaigns in 1988 and 1996 and Congressman Chuck Grassley’s U.S. Senate campaign in 1980. Tom started his career as a reporter at the Saturday Evening Post, where he was first introduced to politics when he was assigned to write a book on a 1980 presidential hopeful, former Texas Governor John Connally.
Tom is a graduate of Iowa State University. Growing up in Iowa, which hosts the nation’s first caucus every presidential election cycle, Tom and his family regularly discussed the issues of the day at the supper table on their family farm. When not in D.C., Tom and his husband, Ben, split their time between Phoenix, Arizona, and Knoxville, Iowa, where he gardens and cans fruits and vegetables.
