• SEC Chairman Gary Gensler’s May 26th appearance before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government where he expressed a desire to work with Congress to regulate crypto exchanges, and how his statements drew a picture of a U.S. government that is in need of regulatory clarity and direction.
• Congress and the Biden Administration are reacting to the cryptocurrency space as events occur rather than working together on a comprehensive regulatory framework similar in scope to the one that provided guidance on e-commerce in the early days of the internet.
• The SEC’s regulatory agenda for 2021 had no mention of Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other cryptocurrency despite increased pressure for a regulatory framework, and what this omission told us about the coming year.
